Meet the Tudors

Choose your own adventure by stepping back in time.

Throughout the day at Hampton Court Palace, guides in Tudor costume play the roles of the important figures from the court of young King Henry VIII. Meet Queen Katherine, Cardinal Wolsey and even the King himself.

A live interpreter with children

Every day, from 10.30am – 3.30pm, there are activities bringing to life the world of the Tudors at Hampton Court Palace.

Outside the West Gate, you can see majestic Tudor dogs, handled by the Master of the Buck Hounds in his deep green livery jacket. Courtiers discuss the latest fashions and you may even get to try on one of the sumptuous items of clothing! Maybe you will be invited to bet on a wrestling match or discuss the King’s health with his doctor.

Inside the Palace, the costumed guides, or live interpreters, as we call them, lead guided tours of the courtyards and the main Tudor apartments. At 2.00 pm each day, we re-enact a scene from the life of the young King, starting in Clock Court.

Every weekend, the King’s musicians join the Tudor court, playing some of Henry VIII’s own work. And for the August Bank Holiday weekend, the cooks will be working in the Tudor Kitchens as well.
